In-person workshops

Our local teaching area for in-person workshops is Greater Vancouver, BC. We offer both public workshops and private (in-home) workshops. We also occasionally travel to the Okanagan-Interior region and Vancouver Island to deliver public workshops.

Infant/Child CPR, Choking + Injury Prevention

Learn essential lifesaving skills for your family!
 
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to react with confidence if an infant or child: 
  • Goes unconscious
  • Stops breathing
  • Begins to choke

Followed by our signature discussion on preventing injuries for babies and toddlers.

This workshop is for information only, no certification is awarded. Certification requires in-person skills assessment and a minimum class time of 4 hours. If you are in need of certification, please check out our certification options listed below on this page.

First Aid for the Infant and Toddler Years (CPR-C/AED)

All the content of the Infant/Child CPR, Choking and Injury Prevention workshop is included: CPR and choking for infants and children, as well as injury prevention for when babies become mobile.

Know what to do if an infant or child:

  • Goes unconscious
  • Stops breathing
  • Begins to choke
Additional material in this 5-hour certification course (compared to our 2-hour workshop) includes:
  • Common baby + toddler injuries: bleeding, burns, bee stings
  • Common baby + toddler illnesses or emergencies: allergies, fevers, seizures, head injury. 
  • As this is a certification level course (CPR-C/AED), we also discuss: Heart attack, stroke, and use of AEDs (defibrillators) – making this a great course for the whole family.

CPR-C/AED certification, valid for 3 years with the Canadian Red Cross, is awarded upon successful completion of the course.

CPR-C for Doulas

  • This is a specialized CPR-C class designed for doulas, but also meets the requirements for the UBC Midwifery Program and nursing programs.

  • This course meets the criteria for birth and postpartum certification through DONA and other organizations.

  • You get a certification in CPR-C/AED, and we also discuss how to modify for pregnancy and how to support clients through a neonatal resuscitation event both in home and hospital environments. 

  • Adult, child, and infant skills are covered, and this is a professional level certification that is appropriate for certifying organizations, postpartum work, and many workplaces outside of the birth world, too.

6 hours (2 online, 4 in-person)

CPR-C/AED certification, valid for 3 years with the Canadian Red Cross, is awarded upon successful completion of the course.

CPR-BLS for Midwives and Nurses

  • Our publicly offered course is a recertification in CPR-BLS for registered midwives and nurses who already have a valid (within 5 years) CPR-HCP or CPR-BLS card.

    For recertification courses, participants need to show proof of past certification in Health Care Provider (HCP) or Basic Life Support (BLS) Level CPR.

  • The course meets the requirements for the BC College of Midwives.

3 hours

In-person public workshops: $55 CAD* per participant (re-certification pricing only, not applicable to full length CPR-BLS courses)

  • CPR-BLS Manual from the Lifesaving Society is provided in new courses (not provided for recertifications)

CPR-BLS certification, valid for 1 year with the Lifesaving Society, is awarded upon successful completion of the course.

Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) Certification Training

  • Become a “car seat technician”, certified in the proper use and installation of car seats and boosters.
  • 100% attendance is required for both the classroom and clinic portions, though there may be alternate arrangements possible for the clinic.
  • Most students find they need a certain degree of physical dexterity to do this work, though skilled technicians are able to coach parents without ever touching a seat.
  • Nursing, non-mobile infants are welcome in the classroom portion of the course.
  • This course is suitable for:
    • nurses, midwives, and doulas
    • family support workers
    • baby and child retailers
    • child care providers
    • community volunteers
    • parents
    • emergency services personnel
  • Successful completion of the course comes with a 3-year certification with the Child Passenger Safety Association of Canada and 3 years of insurance when working as a volunteer (either with other CPSAC volunteers, with another organization, or when volunteering independently). You will receive your course manual and a supply of triplicate check forms.
  • Many who take this course find rewarding volunteer opportunities in their community helping parents and caregivers. Some even earn tips!

3 days

In-person public workshops: $325 CAD* per participant

This fee includes your registration fees with CPSAC

  • CPSAC Child Passenger Safety Technician Manual
  • Supply of triplicate forms for car seat checks

CPST certification, valid for 3 years with the Child Passenger Safety Association of Canada (CPSAC), is awarded upon successful completion of the course.
